Context

Why Now?

ABC News was missing a key functionality of their website that most of their competition already had, a live blog. Like most live blogs, this is a blog post that can be integrated into news websites, providing rolling coverage of an event in real-time.

With 2020 having COVID-19 being our worst pandemic in 100 years, and the most important election of our lifetime, the ABC News team knew developing a live blog would be extremely important to have for online users.

the purpose

The Goal

The number one goal of this project was to create the ABC News Live Blog before the election. Not only to ship it out on time but to perform QA testing so everything runs smoothly on the night of the election.

Everything we create for Disney should be implemented to their other brands as well. I also created a live blog for ESPN for upcoming events as the Super Bowl, NFL Draft, Wimbledon, etc.

Conclusion

My role

This was a monumental project for ABC News so the team included Product Managers, Engineers, UX Director, Product Director, VP of Design & UX, Senior Vice President of Product & Design, and two product designers (including myself).

1. Worked with the other product designer and created the UX for desktop and mobile
2. Used Disney's design system "Prism" and ABC News design system to make sure the UI elements were consistent and correct
3. Designed the live blog for desktop and mobile
4. Presented comps to Product Managers
5. Worked with engineers and performed QA tests
6. Created a live blog for ESPN

Metrics

On an average month, ABC News sees 50 million visitors a month on their website. With the election and featuring the live blog, ABC News had over 100 million visits for November 2020, which was up 95%.
